Leaving Here Cut on the Late Show

· Ed Sullivan Theater · New York

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's note, like Five Horizons', says that as the program closed the band began "Leaving Here," and that the network cut away just as Eddie started to sing. Both chronologies follow "Leaving Here" with the word cut in parentheses, and both notes say every member of the band seemed in good spirits.

On Friday, September 20, 1996, Pearl Jam appeared on the Late Show at the Ed Sullivan Theater, which both chronologies name in their headings. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's note calls the night Pearl Jam's first appearance at the Late Show, and Five Horizons' note calls it a rare network television appearance. Both chronologies print two entries for the night, "Hail Hail" and then "Leaving Here." Neither chronology's entry names an act before Pearl Jam.

The show

The Ed Sullivan Theater

Both headings name the Ed Sullivan Theater, with the place given as New York City, NY, USA, in the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology and as New York, NY, in Five Horizons. Five Horizons brackets 5m after its heading without stating what it measures. The chronology's heading closes with a parenthesis naming the Late Show, and Five Horizons' heading carries a parenthesis that reads Late Show appearance.

The Performance

Both set lines give "Hail Hail" and then "Leaving Here," and each follows the second with the word cut in parentheses. Both notes say the night was unusual and that it ran without commercials. Both notes say every member of the band seemed in good spirits and call "Hail Hail" tight. As the program closed, the notes say, the band began "Leaving Here," and the network cut away just as Eddie started to sing. Both notes close with the words cool performance.

The Next Step

Seattle, four days earlier, is told in A Technical Nightmare in Seattle. Both chronologies put the next show the following night, September 21, at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto; it is told in A Twenty-Minute Sellout at Maple Leaf Gardens.

What the Record Preserves

Under the night's heading the chronology's page hangs one object, an embed whose address is on another site. The night of September 20 comes down to the Ed Sullivan Theater in both headings, 5m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, a first appearance at the Late Show in the chronology's note and a rare one in Five Horizons', two entries in each set line with the second cut, and one object under the date.
