A Twenty-Minute Sellout at Maple Leaf Gardens

· Maple Leaf Gardens · Toronto

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's note opens by saying that it took 20 minutes for the show to sell out. Both notes say that many covers were hinted at during the night, among them three outros of "Daughter" and a teaser in a version of "Blood" that they call intense.

On Saturday, September 21, 1996, Pearl Jam played in Toronto, and both chronologies head the night at Maple Leaf Gardens. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology gives an attendance of 15 000 and marks the show sold out, and Five Horizons gives 16,000 with no status. The chronology's opening act line names Fastbacks, and Five Horizons' support act line names The Fastbacks. The chronology prints eighteen entries in its setlist, three in a first encore and one in a second, twenty-two in all, and Five Horizons gives the same counts on its set and two encore lines.

The show

Maple Leaf Gardens

Both headings place Toronto in Canada; the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's heading gives the province as ON, and Five Horizons' writes out Ontario. Five Horizons brackets 115m after its heading without stating what it measures, and the chronology's heading carries no figure. The chronology's note opens by saying that it took 20 minutes for the show to sell out. Neither chronology's entry gives a capacity, a door or stage time, a ticket price, or a promoter.

The Performance

The chronology's soundcheck line gives one entry, "Wash," and Five Horizons' soundcheck line gives the same one. The chronology's setlist runs "Release," "Hail Hail," "Last Exit," "Tremor Christ," "In My Tree," "Corduroy," "Red Mosquito," "Animal," "Jeremy," "Habit," "Immortality," "Even Flow," "Not For You," "Daughter," "Lukin," "Rearviewmirror," "Alive," and "Blood." The chronology's first encore holds "Who You Are," "I Got Id," and "Leaving Here," and its second holds "Yellow Ledbetter." Five Horizons' set line gives eighteen entries in the chronology's order, its first encore line three, and its second one. Both notes say that the lyrics of "Habit" were changed. Both notes say that many covers were hinted at during the night, among them three outros of "Daughter" and a teaser in a version of "Blood" that they call intense.

The Next Step

The Ed Sullivan Theater in New York, the night before, is told in Leaving Here Cut on the Late Show. Both chronologies put the next show the following night, September 22, in Toledo; it is told in Indifference Under the House Lights in Toledo.

What the Record Preserves

The chronology's entry ends with a remaster series line that names the band, the date, and Toronto and carries the label info-file. Under the night's heading the chronology's page hangs an image whose markup title reads Setlist, one whose markup title reads Pearl Jam takes Toronto, two more images, and two links into its remaster series, one to a zip file and one to a text file. Toronto comes down to Maple Leaf Gardens under one name in both chronologies, an attendance of 15 000 in the chronology and 16,000 in Five Horizons, 115m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, one act on both bill lines, twenty-two entries in each, a sellout in 20 minutes by the chronology's note, and six objects under the date.
