Indifference Under the House Lights in Toledo

· Savage Hall · Toledo

Both notes call the closing "Indifference" stunning and say the house lights were up for it. They also say that Eddie offered to write excuse notes for anyone in the crowd who had school the next day, so that the band could continue to play.

On Sunday, September 22, 1996, Pearl Jam played in Toledo, Ohio, at a hall that the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads as Savage Hall and Five Horizons as John F. Savage Hall. The chronology gives an attendance of 9 000 and marks the show sold out, and Five Horizons gives 9,000 with no status. The chronology's opening act line names Fastbacks, and Five Horizons' support act line names The Fastbacks. The chronology prints eighteen entries in its setlist, four in a first encore and one in a second, twenty-three in all, and Five Horizons gives the same counts on its set and two encore lines.

The show

The Hall in Toledo

Five Horizons brackets 105m after its heading without stating what it measures, and the chronology's heading carries no figure. Both notes end by calling the night a solid show, played to a smallish crowd. Neither chronology's entry gives a capacity, a door or stage time, a ticket price, or a promoter.

The Performance

The chronology's soundcheck line gives "Deep," "Around The Bend," "Mankind," and "Smile," and Five Horizons' soundcheck line gives the same four in the same order. The chronology's setlist runs "Sometimes," "Hail Hail," "Animal," "In My Tree," "Spin The Black Circle," "Corduroy," "Last Exit," "Better Man," "Lukin," "Not For You," "Jeremy," "Even Flow," "Mankind," "Daughter," "Habit," "I Got Id," "Alive," and "Blood." The chronology's first encore holds "Go," "Who You Are," "Rearviewmirror," and "Leaving Here," and its second holds "Indifference." Five Horizons' set line gives eighteen entries in the chronology's order, its first encore line the same four, and its second the same one. Both notes say that Eddie, Ed in Five Horizons' note, botched "I Got Id" at its start. Both notes say that he offered to write excuse notes for anyone in the crowd who had school the next day, so that the band could continue to play. Both notes call the closing "Indifference" stunning and say the house lights were up for it.

The Next Step

Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, the night before, is told in A Twenty-Minute Sellout at Maple Leaf Gardens. Both chronologies put the next show two days later, September 24, at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia; it is told in Immortality Scrapped at Merriweather Post Pavilion.

What the Record Preserves

The chronology's entry ends with a remaster series line that names the band, the date, and Toledo and carries the label info-file. Under the night's heading the chronology's page hangs a link to a PDF file, four images, and two links into its remaster series, one to a zip file and one to a text file. The house holds two files for the night: a text file and a playlist. The text file opens with two lines in the form of Five Horizons' heading and attendance line, giving the date, John F. Savage Hall in Toledo, OH, and an attendance of 9,000. It brackets 115m after the place without stating what it measures, where Five Horizons' heading brackets 105m. Under a line that reads Setlist, it then gives twenty-three names, one to a line and with no set or encore division, from "Sometimes" to "Indifference" in the order of the chronology's setlist and encores. The playlist's twenty-four lines are MP3 file names, running from "Sometimes" to "Indifference." The text file and the playlist state no source, lineage, or length. Toledo comes down to one hall under two forms of its name, 105m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, an attendance of 9 000 in the chronology and 9,000 in Five Horizons, one act on both bill lines, twenty-three entries in each, a closing "Indifference" that both notes call stunning, seven objects under the date, and two house files.
