Eddie Solo in Augusta
The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's second encore gives "I Am A Patriot" with the words Eddie solo, and both notes say Eddie sang the last song by himself while his bandmates watched. Both notes say the Fastbacks helped Pearl Jam with backup vocals on "Leaving Here."

On Thursday, September 26, 1996, Pearl Jam played in Augusta, Maine, at the venue that the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads as the Augusta Civic Center and Five Horizons as the Civic Center. The chronology gives an attendance of 8 000 and marks the show sold out. The chronology's opening act line names Fastbacks, and Five Horizons' support act line names The Fastbacks. The chronology prints seventeen entries in its setlist, five in a first encore and one in a second, twenty-three in all, and Five Horizons gives the same counts on its set and two encore lines. Both notes open by saying that a snippet thrown into "Better Man" sounded great.
The show
Augusta, Maine
Five Horizons brackets 115m after its heading without stating what it measures, and the chronology's heading carries no figure. Neither chronology's entry gives a capacity, a door or stage time, a ticket price, or a promoter.
The Performance
The chronology's soundcheck line lists "Off He Goes," "Garden," "Present Tense," "Better Man," "I Can't Explain," "Let My Love Open The Door," and "Last Exit," and Five Horizons' soundcheck line gives the same seven entries in the same order. The chronology's setlist runs "Sometimes," "Hail Hail," "Animal," "Spin The Black Circle," "Tremor Christ," "In My Tree," "Lukin," "Not For You," "Better Man," "Corduroy," "Jeremy," "Red Mosquito," "State Of Love And Trust," "Black," "Habit," "Rearviewmirror," and "Alive." Its first encore holds "Who You Are," "Even Flow," "Daughter," "Blood," and "Leaving Here," and its second holds "I Am A Patriot," with the words Eddie solo in parentheses. Five Horizons' set line gives the same seventeen entries in the chronology's order, its first encore line the same five, and its second encore line one entry. Both notes say Eddie had the crowd yell three times, then laughed and started "Habit." Both notes, Five Horizons' under the short form RVM, mention the slow beginning of "Rearviewmirror." The chronology's note says that at the climax of "Alive" a player attending the show came onstage bringing red wine for Eddie, and that Eddie climbed onto the man's back and, still singing, went piggyback over the stage. Five Horizons' note says that toward the song's end someone took the stage and lifted Ed onto his shoulders, and that Ed finished the song there. The chronology's note says that the player later called the night among the most thrilling things he had known. Both notes say that after "Blood" Eddie picked up a shirt thrown to the stage. Both notes say the Fastbacks helped Pearl Jam on "Leaving Here" with backup vocals. Both notes say Eddie sang the last song by himself, playing guitar, while his bandmates looked on from one side of the stage.
The Next Step
Columbia, two days earlier, at Merriweather Post Pavilion, is told in Immortality Scrapped at Merriweather Post Pavilion. Both chronologies put the next show two days later, on September 28, at Downing Stadium in New York; it is told in A Torrential Downpour at Downing Stadium.

What the Record Preserves
Under the night's heading the chronology's page hangs three links to PDF files and three images. Augusta on September 26 comes down to one building under a longer and a shorter form of its name, 115m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, an attendance of 8 000 in the chronology, one act on both bill lines, twenty-three entries in each chronology, a last song that both notes say Eddie sang by himself, and six objects under the date.
