Stone Sings Mankind at Downing Stadium
The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's note, like Five Horizons', says Stone sang "Mankind." Both notes say that after "Leaving Here" Mike began "Yellow Ledbetter" and Eddie stopped him, and that the band played "Off He Goes" and "Present Tense" instead.

On Sunday, September 29, 1996, Pearl Jam played a second night at Downing Stadium, on Randall's Island in New York, and both chronologies head the night as they did the one before. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology again gives an attendance of 33 000 and marks the show sold out, and Five Horizons again gives 30,000 with no status. The chronology's opening acts line again names Ben Harper, then Fastbacks, and Five Horizons' support act line again names Ben Harper, then The Fastbacks. The chronology prints twenty-three entries in its setlist, six in a first encore and three in a second, thirty-two in all, and Five Horizons gives the same counts on its set and two encore lines.
The show
The Same Stadium, the Next Night
The two headings name the stadium as they did the night before, Downing Stadium on Randall's Island, Five Horizons' in New York, NY, and the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's in New York City, NY, with USA added to the place. The house's information file gives the venue as Randall's Island Stadium, in New York City, on its third line. Five Horizons brackets 168m after its heading without stating what it measures, and the chronology's heading carries no figure.
The Performance
The chronology's setlist runs "Sometimes," "Go," "Spin The Black Circle," "Hail Hail," "Animal," "Tremor Christ," "Who You Are," "Corduroy," "Lukin," "Better Man," "Not For You," "Jeremy," "Once," "Rats," "Last Exit," "Habit," "Rearviewmirror," "Immortality," "Whipping," "I Got Id," "Black," "Alive," and "Porch." Its first encore holds "In My Tree," "Even Flow," "Daughter," "Mankind," "Long Road," and "Leaving Here," and its second holds "Off He Goes," "Present Tense," and "Yellow Ledbetter." Five Horizons' set line gives twenty-three entries in the chronology's order, its first encore line the same six, and its second the same three. Both notes describe a show of nearly three hours with a pit they call raging, and say that more than once the band paused so that the crowd would calm down. Both notes say that in "Porch" Eddie, having covered himself in duct tape from head to foot, leapt into the pit. Both notes say a t-shirt was thrown to the stage ahead of the first encore. Both notes say Stone sang "Mankind." Both notes say that once "Leaving Here" was over Mike began "Yellow Ledbetter," that Eddie stopped him, and that the band played "Off He Goes" and then "Present Tense" instead.
The Next Step
New York, the night before, at the same stadium, is told in A Torrential Downpour at Downing Stadium.
Recording & sound
What the Record Preserves
The chronology's entry ends with a remaster series line that names the band, the date, NYC, and v2 in parentheses, and carries the label info-file. Under the night's heading the chronology's page hangs an image whose markup title reads Setlist, two more images, and two links into its remaster series, one to a zip file and one to a text file. The house holds three files for the night: the remaster series' information file, its fingerprint list, and a text file that gives a set list. The information file opens with three lines naming the band, the date, and the stadium with its city and state. Its sources entry prints four lines, lettered a to d: line a starts with Sony ECM-909, line b with Core Sounds, line c with AKG 391, and line d with Sonic Studios (DSM6); CDR is the last word of the first two lines and FLAC of the other two. By the file's account the left of the mix is source a (left), patched with c (right), and the right is source b (right), patched with d (right). Its lineage line starts with CDR/FLAC, and FLAC is the last word of that line. Its notes, the file's own account of how the recording was handled, say that every source was equalized for tonal balance, that two of the sources had glitches and so served for patching the other two's glitches and loud audience, and that this is a second version, the first having been a stereo mix of two sources. Its thirty-five numbered labels fall into three groups: Intro and twenty-three labels from "Sometimes" to "Porch" in the chronology's setlist order, then an Encore Break label and six from "In My Tree" to "Leaving Here," then a second Encore Break label and three from "Off He Goes" to "Yellow Ledbetter." The fingerprint list gives each of thirty-five FLAC file names a value, the names following the labels. The thirteenth label, like the thirteenth line of the fingerprint list, gives "Jeremy" with the word new in parentheses. The set list text file opens with the band, the date written 9-29-96, and a place line ending with NYC, and then prints thirty-two names, one to a line, with no set or encore division, from "Sometimes" to "Yellow Ledbetter." The information file and the fingerprint list name no recordist and give no length for the recording. Downing Stadium on September 29 comes down to one stadium under the headings of the night before, 168m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, an attendance of 33 000 in the chronology and 30,000 in Five Horizons, two acts on both bill lines, thirty-two entries in each chronology, "Mankind" sung by Stone in both notes, the objects under the date, and three house files.
