Oceans Opens the Show in Buffalo
Both notes say the night opened with "Oceans," which no show had opened with since the last show of 1995. Both notes also say that "Footsteps," played by request, had its first performance of the tour.

On Tuesday, October 1, 1996, Pearl Jam played the Marine Midland Arena in Buffalo, a venue both chronologies name alike. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology gives an attendance of 20 000 and marks the show sold out, and Five Horizons gives 21,000. The chronology's opening act line names Fastbacks, and Five Horizons' support act line names The Fastbacks. The chronology's setlist runs from "Oceans" to "Porch," and its encore holds five entries, from "Even Flow" to "Yellow Ledbetter."
The show
Marine Midland Arena
Both headings place the arena in Buffalo, NY, the chronology's with USA after the state. Five Horizons brackets 120m after its heading without stating what it measures. Both notes close by praising the bond between the band and the audience that night.
The Performance
The chronology's setlist runs "Oceans," "Last Exit," "Hail Hail," "Spin The Black Circle," "Animal," "In My Tree," "Corduroy," "Lukin," "Better Man," "Not For You," "State Of Love And Trust," "Rats," "Jeremy," "Off He Goes," "Footsteps," "Whipping," "Immortality," "Alive," and "Porch." Its encore holds "Even Flow," "Daughter," "Blood," "Present Tense," and "Yellow Ledbetter." Five Horizons' set and encore lines give the same entries in the same order. Both notes say that "Oceans" opened the show and that no show had opened with it since the last one of 1995. Both notes say "Rats" was started, halted, and then taken up again, with changes to the song. Both notes say that after a slip in the words as "Off He Goes" began, Eddie altered the lyrics. Both notes say "Footsteps," played by request, had its first performance of the tour, and that "Immortality" passed smoothly into "Alive." Both notes say that "Porch" went wrong and was begun again, and that Eddie apologized, saying the elections were much on his mind. In the jam that followed, by the notes' account, he brought a kid wearing a Who shirt onto the stage and swapped shirts with him. Then, in the same account, the kid dove from the stage, and the audience at once tore the shirt from him. Both notes say the band came straight back after "Porch" and went into "Even Flow," which they say had a cool jam. Both notes say "Blood" took in a few lines from another piece. Both notes call "Present Tense" lovely.
The Next Step
New York, two days earlier, is told in Stone Sings Mankind at Downing Stadium. Both chronologies put the next show the following night, October 2, at the Meadows Music Theatre in Hartford; it is told in A Long, Talkative Night in Hartford.
Recording & sound
What the Record Preserves
The chronology's entry ends with a remaster series line that names the band, the date, and Buffalo and carries the label info-file. Under the night's heading the chronology's page hangs six objects: an image whose markup title reads Setlist, two more images, a link to a PDF file, and two links into its remaster series, one to a zip file and one to a text file. The house holds two files for the night: the remaster series' information file and its fingerprint list. The information file opens with three lines that name the band, the date, and the Marine Midland Arena with its city and state. Its lineage line starts and ends with FLAC, and its notes, the file's own statement about processing, say that swings in volume were evened out, the volume raised, and many claps removed. The same notes say that three small faults in "Even Flow," a cut in "Daughter," and a cut in the encore break were patched from another source, which was corrected for speed because it ran about 1% fast. The file's numbered labels follow the chronology's setlist in order from "Oceans" to "Porch," then, after an Encore Break label, run from "Even Flow" to "Yellow Ledbetter." The fingerprint list gives each FLAC file name a value, the names repeating the labels, except that the third drops the comma from "Hail, Hail." Buffalo on October 1 comes down to one arena named alike, 120m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, an attendance of 20 000 in the chronology and 21,000 in Five Horizons, one act under two forms of its name, a set and an encore in one order in both chronologies, an opener that both notes say no show had used since the last show of 1995, six objects under the date, and two house files.
