A Long, Talkative Night in Hartford

· Meadows Music Theatre · Hartford

Both notes call the show long and great and Eddie very talkative. Five Horizons' note says "Alive" was started and then stopped for technical problems, and that Eddie sang "Footsteps" while they were put right.

On Wednesday, October 2, 1996, Pearl Jam played the Meadows Music Theatre in Hartford, which both chronologies' headings name alike. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology gives an attendance of 24 185 and marks the show sold out. Fastbacks stand on the chronology's opening act line, and The Fastbacks on Five Horizons' support act line. The chronology prints a setlist of twenty entries and two encores of five and one, while Five Horizons prints nineteen set entries and one encore line of six.

The show

The Meadows Music Theatre

Both headings place the theatre in Hartford, CT, the chronology's with USA after the state. Five Horizons brackets 131m after its heading without stating what it measures. Five Horizons' note says that during "Blood" a section of the fence fell and something close to a riot followed. In a parenthesis the note gives its own account: as the barrier fell, the security guards started using pepper spray, and as the wind blew into the pavilion, people in their seats moved toward the stage to get away from the spray, which looked like a rush at the stage. The same note says that before "Who You Are" Eddie tried to quieten the crowd, and that he changed a line in the song's second verse.

The Performance

The chronology's setlist runs "Long Road," "Hail Hail," "Animal," "Last Exit," "In My Tree," "Corduroy," "Better Man," "Not For You," "Jeremy," "Red Mosquito," "Black," "Rearviewmirror," "Lukin," "Elderly Woman," "State Of Love And Trust," "Alive," "Footsteps," "Alive," "Blood," and "Porch." The chronology prints the fourteenth entry, "Elderly Woman," with an ellipsis. Its first encore holds "Who You Are," "Even Flow," "Daughter," "Leaving Here," and "Present Tense," and its second "Yellow Ledbetter." Five Horizons' set line gives nineteen entries, with none standing between "State Of Love And Trust" and "Footsteps," and it lists "Alive" after "Footsteps." Its one encore line gives six entries, the last of them "Yellow Ledbetter." Five Horizons' note says "Alive" was started and then stopped for technical problems, and that Eddie sang "Footsteps" while they were put right. Both notes open by calling the show long and great, and Eddie very talkative. Five Horizons' note says that in the tag to "Daughter" Eddie had the crowd sing along with him.

The Next Step

Buffalo, the night before, is told in Oceans Opens the Show in Buffalo. Both chronologies put the next show two days later, October 4, at Memorial Stadium in Charlotte; it is told in Throw Your Arms Around Me at the Soundcheck.

What the Record Preserves

Five Horizons' entry closes with two short lines that read as link labels of its page: review, and poster. The chronology's entry ends with a remaster series line that names the band, the date, and Hartford and carries the label info-file. Under the night's heading the chronology's page hangs fifteen objects: three images whose markup titles read Eddie Vedder, nine more images, a link to a PDF file, and two links into its remaster series, one to a zip file and one to a text file. The house holds three files for the night: the remaster series' information file, its fingerprint list, and a checksum list of a second kind. The information file opens with four lines that name the band, a date, the Meadows Music Theatre, and Hartford, CT, and its second line gives the date as October 5, 1996, where both chronologies date the show October 2. Its twenty-eight numbered labels open with Intro and follow Five Horizons' set line in order from "Long Road" to "Porch," then, after a label for the first encore break, run from "Who You Are" to "Present Tense," and after a second such label close with "Yellow Ledbetter." The fifteenth of them gives "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town" in full. Like the chronology, which prints two encore fields, the file sets two encore breaks, where Five Horizons prints one encore line. The fingerprint list and the checksum list each give the twenty-eight FLAC file names, the labels without their hyphens, except that the third drops the comma from "Hail, Hail" and the fifteenth gives just the words "Elderly Woman." Hartford on October 2 comes down to one theatre named alike, 131m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, an attendance of 24 185 in the chronology, one act under two forms of its name, two set lists that part over one entry and over the encore's division, a long and talkative show in both notes, fifteen objects under the date, and three house files.
