The Crowd's Choice in Dublin

· Point Theatre · Dublin

Both notes say the crowd at The Point Theatre got to choose the last song, "Leaving Here" or "Yellow Ledbetter," and that "Yellow Ledbetter" was played. Five Horizons' note says "Mankind" had been skipped in Cork.

On Saturday, October 26, 1996, Pearl Jam played The Point Theatre in Dublin, Ireland, the theatre both chronologies name in their headings. Five Horizons gives an attendance of 8,500, the chronology's opening act line names Fastbacks, and Five Horizons' support act line names The Fastbacks. The chronology prints eighteen entries in its setlist, five in a first encore and one in a second, twenty-four in all, and Five Horizons gives the same counts on its set lines and on encore lines it calls enc 1 and enc 2. Both notes say the band seemed friendly and in good spirits, and Eddie rather chatty.

The show

The Point Theatre

Both headings give the venue as The Point Theatre and the place as Dublin, Ireland. Five Horizons brackets 106m after its heading without stating what it measures.

The Performance

The chronology's setlist runs "Release," "Last Exit," "Animal," "Spin The Black Circle," "Hail Hail," "In My Tree," "Corduroy," "Elderly Woman," which it follows with three dots, "Lukin," "Mankind," "Even Flow," "Daughter," "Jeremy," "Go," "Habit," "Immortality," "Alive," and "Blood." Its first encore holds "Who You Are," "Better Man," "State Of Love And Trust," "Off He Goes," and "Hunger Strike," and its second "Yellow Ledbetter." Five Horizons gives the same eighteen entries in the chronology's order on its set lines, the same five on its enc 1 lines, and the same one on its enc 2 line. Both notes say Eddie spoke of "Mankind" as Stone Gossard's. Five Horizons' note says the song had been skipped in Cork. Both notes say that Mike gave "Even Flow" a jam they call very cool and different. Both notes say that after "Alive" Eddie remarked that the band was playing Dublin proper for the first time, and spoke of believing he had agoraphobia. Both notes say the crowd got to choose the last song, "Leaving Here" or "Yellow Ledbetter," and that "Yellow Ledbetter" was the one played.

The Next Step

Cork, two days earlier, is told in Still at Home in Ireland. Both chronologies put the next show two days later, on October 28, at Wembley Arena in London; it is told in A First Live Performance of Smile at Wembley.

What the Record Preserves

Five Horizons' entry ends with a line reading poster. Under the night's heading the chronology's page hangs a link to a PDF file and two images. The house holds one text file for the night, and it repeats Five Horizons' heading, support act line, set and encore lines, and note. Dublin on October 26 comes down to one theatre both chronologies name alike, 106m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, an attendance of 8,500 in Five Horizons, one act on both bill lines, twenty-four entries in each chronology, a last song that both notes say the crowd chose, the objects under the date, and one house text file.
