A Radio Broadcast from the Deutschlandhalle

· Deutschlandhalle · Berlin

Five Horizons' note says the Berlin show went out on radio, carried by many stations worldwide. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology marks the show sold out, at 12 000.

On Sunday, November 3, 1996, Pearl Jam played the Deutschlandhalle in Berlin, a venue both chronologies name alike. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's opening act line names Fastbacks, and Five Horizons' support act line names The Fastbacks. The chronology prints a setlist of twenty-one entries and an encore of six, and Five Horizons a set line of twenty entries and an encore line of six.

The show

Deutschlandhalle

Both headings place the hall in Berlin, Germany. Five Horizons brackets 125m after its heading without stating what it measures. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology gives an attendance of 12 000 and marks the show sold out. Five Horizons' note says that the show went out on radio, on stations in many parts of the world.

The Performance

The chronology's setlist runs "Long Road," "Last Exit," "Animal," "Hail Hail," "Go," "Red Mosquito," "In My Tree," "Corduroy," "Better Man," "Lukin," "Mankind," "Hunger Strike," "Even Flow," "Daughter," "Jeremy," "Sometimes," "Rearviewmirror," "Museum Song," "Immortality," "Alive," and "Blood." Its encore holds "Who You Are," "State Of Love And Trust," "Not For You," "Present Tense," "Leaving Here," and "Yellow Ledbetter." Five Horizons' set line gives twenty entries in the chronology's order without "Museum Song," and its encore line the same six in the same order.

The Next Step

Warsaw, two days earlier, is told in A Sold-Out Night at Torwar. Both chronologies put the next show the following night, November 4, at the Sporthalle in Hamburg; it is told in A Funky Not for You in Hamburg.

What the Record Preserves

The chronology's entry ends with a remaster series line that names the band, the date, and Berlin and carries the label info-file. Under the night's heading the chronology's page hangs seven objects: an image whose markup title reads Eddie Vedder, three more images, a link to a PDF file, and two links into its remaster series, one to a zip file and one to a text file. The house holds two files for the night, in one folder: the remaster series' information file and its fingerprint list. The information file opens with three lines that name the band, the date, and Berlin, Germany. Its source line starts with the number 98, its lineage line starts and ends with FLAC, and its notes, the file's own statement about processing, say that some swings in volume were smoothed out and the volume was raised. Its twenty-eight numbered labels, in two groups, run from an Intro label to "Yellow Ledbetter," and the fingerprint list gives a value to each of twenty-eight FLAC file names that follow those labels number by number. Berlin on November 3 comes down to one hall named alike, 125m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, an attendance of 12 000 in the chronology, one act under two forms of its name, a setlist of twenty-one against a set line of twenty, an encore of six in each, a radio broadcast in Five Horizons' note, seven objects under the date, and two house files in one folder.
