Mutual Admiration in Amsterdam

· Rai Parkhal · Amsterdam

Five Horizons' note ends by calling the admiration between the band and Amsterdam obvious and mutual. It calls the audience great, and the crowd, it says, sang along with "Black," "Alive," and "Sometimes."

On Wednesday, November 6, 1996, Pearl Jam played the RAI Parkhal in Amsterdam, a venue both chronologies name alike. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's opening act line names Fastbacks, and Five Horizons' support act line names The Fastbacks. Both chronologies print a set of nineteen entries and two encores of five and one, the same entries in the same order.

The show

RAI Parkhal

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology places the RAI Parkhal in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and Five Horizons places it in Amsterdam, Holland. Five Horizons brackets 115m after its heading without stating what it measures. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology gives an attendance of 13 000 and marks the show sold out, and Five Horizons gives 13,000. Five Horizons' note calls the hall huge and flat, and it says that, by Ed's account, with warning the band would have booked a pair of shows in smaller, cosier halls.

The Performance

The chronology's setlist runs "Long Road," "Hail Hail," "Once," "Animal," "Last Exit," "Dissident," "In My Tree," "Corduroy," "Better Man," "Habit," "Mankind," "Even Flow," "Black," "Jeremy," "Sometimes," "Rearviewmirror," "Immortality," "Alive," and "Porch." Its first encore holds "Who You Are," "Lukin," "State Of Love And Trust," "Present Tense," and "Blood," and its second "Rockin' In The Free World." Five Horizons' set and two encore lines give the same nineteen, five, and one entries in the same order. Five Horizons' note calls the audience great and says the crowd sang along with "Black," with "Alive," loudly, and with "Sometimes." It says that Ed joked of a small party in his hotel room after the show, and that "Porch" followed. The note says that chants met the start of the encore, and that during "Blood" Ed climbed the speakers, then the ladders, and swung out over the audience. Its last line finds the admiration between the band and Amsterdam mutual and obvious.

The Next Step

Hamburg, two days earlier, is told in A Funky Not for You in Hamburg. Both chronologies put the next show the following night, November 7, in Paris; it is told in Roadhouse Blues Opens the Encore in Paris.

What the Record Preserves

Five Horizons' entry closes with three short lines that read as link labels of its page: main setlist scan, encore setlist scan, and poster. Under the night's heading the chronology's page hangs fifteen objects: an image whose markup title reads Setlist, one whose markup title reads Ticket, and thirteen more images. Amsterdam on November 6 comes down to one hall named alike and placed in two forms of its country, 115m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, an attendance of 13 000 in the chronology and 13,000 in Five Horizons, one act under two forms of its name, a set of nineteen and encores of five and one in one order in both chronologies, an audience that Five Horizons' note calls great, and fifteen objects under the date.
