Roadhouse Blues Opens the Encore in Paris

· Zenith · Paris

Both chronologies open the first encore with "Roadhouse Blues," and both give "Smile" and "Yellow Ledbetter" as the second. The chronology's setlist runs from "Wash" to "Alive."

On Thursday, November 7, 1996, Pearl Jam played in Paris, at the venue the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology names Le Zénith and Five Horizons Le Zenith. The chronology's opening act line names Fastbacks, and Five Horizons' support act line names The Fastbacks. The chronology prints a setlist of eighteen entries and two encores of five and two, and Five Horizons' set and two encore lines give the same counts.

The show

In Paris

Both headings place the venue in Paris, France. Five Horizons brackets 115m after its heading without stating what it measures. Five Horizons gives an attendance of 5,000. Both notes call the show upbeat and the band in good form, and both say the audience behaved badly.

The Performance

The chronology's setlist runs "Wash," "Hail Hail," "Last Exit," "Once," "Tremor Christ," "Who You Are," "Corduroy," "Better Man," "Even Flow," "Jeremy," "Off He Goes," "Animal," "Daughter," "Lukin," "Rearviewmirror," "I Got Id," "Whipping," and "Alive." Its first encore holds "Roadhouse Blues," "Sometimes," "Black," "State Of Love And Trust," and "Porch," and its second "Smile" and "Yellow Ledbetter." Five Horizons' set line gives eighteen entries and its two encore lines five and two. Both notes call that night's "Rearviewmirror" cranked. The chronology's note says that during "Alive" a fan reached the stage and sang briefly. At the first encore, the chronology's note says, Eddie told how the band had decided to enrol in a course at the university in town and kept finding excuses not to go. Mike then started a quick riff, from which the band went on to a short "Roadhouse Blues," a song the note gives as The Doors' and calls quite unexpected. Eddie closed the story, the note says, by saying that although the band missed every session, he had at least written the next song, "Sometimes." Five Horizons' note gives the end of the story in the chronology's words, with the name Ed for Eddie.

The Next Step

Amsterdam, the night before, is told in Mutual Admiration in Amsterdam. Both chronologies put the next show two days later, November 9, at the Hallenstadion in Zurich; it is told in A Strap Made in Zurich.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

Five Horizons' entry closes with a one-word line, poster, that reads as a link label of its page. The chronology's entry ends with a remaster series line that names the band, the date, and Paris and carries the label info-file. Under the night's heading the chronology's page hangs five objects: an image whose markup title reads Ticket; one whose markup title reads Jeff Ament, Eddie Vedder & Stone Gossard; one more image; and two links into its remaster series, one to a zip file and one to a text file. The house holds two files for the night, in one folder: the remaster series' information file and its fingerprint list. The information file opens with three lines that name the band, the date, and the venue with its city and country. Of its two source lines, lettered A and B, line B starts with Sonic Studios, and the chain on line A ends at FLAC and the one on line B at SHN, as the file prints them. Two lines on the mix give its left channel as source A's right channel and its right channel as source B's right channel. Its lineage line starts with FLAC and SHN, joined by a slash, and ends with FLAC, and its notes, the file's own statement about processing, say that loud claps were removed and the volume raised. Its twenty-seven numbered labels, in three groups, run from "Wash" to "Yellow Ledbetter," and the fingerprint list gives a value to each of twenty-seven FLAC file names that follow those labels number by number. Paris on November 7 comes down to one venue in Paris, 115m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, an attendance of 5,000 in Five Horizons, one act under two forms of its name, a setlist of eighteen and encores of five and two in each chronology, "Roadhouse Blues" at the head of both first encores, five objects under the date, and two house files in one folder.
