A Song Before the Fastbacks in Milan

· Forum · Milan

Both notes say that the singer played "The Kids Are Alright" by himself before the Fastbacks opened. The chronology gives the song a pre-set field of its own, and Five Horizons prints it on the first line of its set field.

On Wednesday, November 13, 1996, Pearl Jam played the Forum in Milan, Italy, the venue both chronologies name in their headings. The chronology gives an attendance of 12 700 and marks the show sold out; its opening act line names Fastbacks, and Five Horizons' support act line names The Fastbacks. The chronology prints seventeen entries in its setlist, five in a first encore and one in a second, and Five Horizons gives the same counts on its set line and on lines it calls enc 1 and enc 2.

The Performance

Both notes say that the singer played "The Kids Are Alright" by himself before the Fastbacks opened. The chronology gives that song a pre-set field of its own, and Five Horizons prints it on the first line of its set field, apart from the entries that begin on the next line. The chronology's setlist runs "Long Road," "Go," "Last Exit," "Hail Hail," "Red Mosquito," "Who You Are," "Off He Goes," "Corduroy," "Better Man," "Habit," "Even Flow," "Daughter," "Jeremy," "Sometimes," "Rearviewmirror," "Present Tense," and "Alive." The chronology's first encore holds "Once," "State Of Love And Trust," "Nothingman," "Smile," and "Porch," and its second "Yellow Ledbetter." Five Horizons' set line gives seventeen entries in the chronology's order, and its two encore lines give the same five and the same one. Both notes say that the show and its audience seemed very subdued, though polite, until "Even Flow"; from that song on, the crowd joined in, singing and clapping, and Mike woke up his guitar, as they put it. They say that from there the concert grew, with a "Rearviewmirror" they call perfect. Both notes say that "Nothingman" came once "State Of Love And Trust" had ended and was played as if it were an everyday thing, with the audience singing along as to a standard. Both notes say that the harmonica stood out on "Smile," on which Jeff played guitar and Stone bass, and that near the end of "Porch" the singer turned a small amplifier on its side and stood on top of it. Both notes end by praising the setlist.

The Next Step

Rome, the night before, is told in From Release to Alive in Rome. Prague, two days later, is told in Mankind to Porch in Prague.

What the Record Preserves

Five Horizons ends its entry with three short lines that read as link labels of its page: a setlist scan marked autographed, a main and encore setlist scan, and the one word different. Under the night's heading the chronology's page hangs an image whose markup title reads Setlist, one whose markup title reads Ticket, and ten more images. Milan comes down to the Forum in both headings, 115m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, an attendance of 12 700 in the chronology, one act on both bill lines, a song the singer played by himself before the Fastbacks in both notes, seventeen set entries and two encores in one order in both chronologies, and the objects under the date.
