Mankind to Porch in Prague

· Sportovni Hala · Prague

Both chronologies give an encore of seven entries that runs from "Mankind" to "Porch." They give the main set in one order too, from "Go" to "Alive."

On Friday, November 15, 1996, Pearl Jam played in Prague, Czech Republic, at the venue that the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads as Sportovní hala and Five Horizons as the Sports Hall. The chronology prints nineteen entries in its setlist and seven in its encore, and Five Horizons gives the same counts on its set line and on a line it calls enc.

The show

Two Names in Prague

Five Horizons brackets 121m after its heading without stating what it measures.

The Performance

Both notes say that the show began two hours late and that the wait came close to a panic in the crowd. The chronology's opening act line names Fastbacks, and its note says that because of the delay Fastbacks did not play. Five Horizons' note says that the band played a great setlist, but without The Fastbacks opening. The chronology's setlist runs "Go," "Last Exit," "Animal," "Spin The Black Circle," "Hail Hail," "Red Mosquito," "Who You Are," "Off He Goes," "Corduroy," "Better Man," "Habit," "Even Flow," "Daughter," "Jeremy," "Sometimes," "Rearviewmirror," "Present Tense," "Black," and "Alive." The chronology's encore holds "Mankind," "Once," "Hunger Strike," "State Of Love And Trust," "Immortality," "Smile," and "Porch." Five Horizons' set line gives nineteen entries and its encore line seven, each in the chronology's order. Both notes say that the singer's voice was a bit ragged in "Last Exit," perhaps for want of time to warm up, and they call "Off He Goes" a sweet version, with some nice guitar fills. Both notes say that "Hunger Strike" came in a short version, that Jeff and Stone traded guitars for "Smile," and that during "Porch" the singer scaled the light tower, returning to his climbing antics.

The Next Step

Milan, two days earlier, is told in A Song Before the Fastbacks in Milan. Budapest, two days later, is told in A First Live Performance of Black, Red, Yellow in Budapest.

What the Record Preserves

Five Horizons ends its entry with a line that reads main and encore setlist scan. Under the night's heading the chronology's page hangs an image whose markup title reads Ad, one whose markup title reads Setlist, one whose markup title reads Eddie Vedder, and three more images. Prague comes down to a venue that the two chronologies name differently, 121m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, nineteen set entries in each chronology, an encore of seven entries from "Mankind" to "Porch" in each, and six objects under the date.
