A First Live Performance of Black, Red, Yellow in Budapest

· Sportcsarnok · Budapest

Both notes say that "Black, Red, Yellow" had its first live performance that night. They say that the song sounded super as it led into the next one.

On Sunday, November 17, 1996, Pearl Jam played in Budapest, Hungary, at the venue that the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads as the Budapest Sportcsarnok and Five Horizons as the Sports Hall. The chronology gives an attendance of 10 000; its opening act line names Fastbacks, and Five Horizons' support act line names The Fastbacks. The chronology prints eighteen entries in its setlist, and Five Horizons gives the same eighteen on its set line, in the same order.

The show

Two Names in Budapest

Five Horizons brackets 115m after its heading without stating what it measures.

The Performance

The chronology's soundcheck line gives an entry it prints as Improv, then "MFC," then a second Improv, and Five Horizons' soundcheck line gives four entries. The chronology's setlist runs "Sometimes," "Corduroy," "Hail Hail," "Animal," "Dissident," "Who You Are," "Black Red Yellow," "Rearviewmirror," "Better Man," "Habit," "Off He Goes," "Even Flow," "Glorified G," "Daughter," "Jeremy," "State Of Love And Trust," "Immortality," and "Alive." The chronology's encore holds "Mankind," "Lukin," "I Got Id," "Present Tense," "Once," "Leaving Here," and "Porch." Five Horizons' set line gives the same eighteen entries in the same order. Both notes say that "Black, Red, Yellow" had its first live performance that night and that the song sounded super as it led into the next one; the chronology's note names that next song as "Rearviewmirror." The chronology's note says that, with ticket sales below what had been hoped for, the Hungarian promoters asked for help, and that soldiers were brought to the arena by bus and rejoiced at the outing. Both notes call the jam in "Daughter" quite moving and the encore amazing, Five Horizons' note naming the jam an improv, and they say that the Fastbacks lent a hand on "Leaving Here."

The Next Step

Prague, two days earlier, is told in Mankind to Porch in Prague. Istanbul, two days later, is told in Long Road into Sometimes in Istanbul.

What the Record Preserves

Five Horizons ends its entry with lines that read main and encore setlist scan, handbill, and ticket. Under the night's heading the chronology's page hangs two images whose markup titles read Ad, one whose markup title reads Setlist, one whose markup title reads Encore, one whose markup title reads Ticket, and three more images. Budapest comes down to a venue that the two chronologies name differently, 115m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, an attendance of 10 000 in the chronology, one act on both bill lines, eighteen set entries in one order in both chronologies, a first live performance of "Black, Red, Yellow" in both notes, and the objects under the date.
