Parting Ways at the Barcelona Soundcheck

· Palau Dels Esports · Barcelona

Both chronologies open the night's soundcheck with "Parting Ways," and Five Horizons' note says the song would stay unreleased for four more years. The house's remaster series information file says a second source was mixed into the right channel to widen the stereo separation.

On Thursday, November 21, 1996, Pearl Jam played in Barcelona, Spain, at the venue that the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads as the Palacio de los Deportes and Five Horizons as the Sports Palace. The chronology gives an attendance of 8 000 and marks the show sold out, and Five Horizons gives 8,000. The chronology's opening act line names Fastbacks, and Five Horizons' support act line names The Fastbacks. Both chronologies give the same nineteen entries in one order in the main set, then a first encore of six and a second of one.

The show

The Venue in Barcelona

Both headings give the place as Barcelona, Spain. Five Horizons brackets 125m after its heading without stating what it measures.

The Performance

Both chronologies print a soundcheck for the night, and each opens it with "Parting Ways" and closes it with "Garden," "Leaving Here," and "I'm Open." Five Horizons' note opens with the soundcheck and says that "Parting Ways," played there, would stay unreleased for four more years. The chronology's setlist runs "Wash," "Last Exit," "Hail Hail," "Animal," "Red Mosquito," "Who You Are," "Corduroy," "Better Man," "Off He Goes," "Habit," "Even Flow," "Jeremy," "Daughter," "Sometimes," "Lukin," "Rearviewmirror," "Immortality," "Alive," and "Porch." Its first encore holds "Mankind," "Once," "State Of Love And Trust," "Present Tense," "Smile," and "Blood," and its second "Around The Bend." Five Horizons gives the same nineteen entries in the same order on its set line, the same six on its enc 1 line, and the same one on its enc 2 line.

The Next Step

Istanbul, two days earlier, is told in Long Road into Sometimes in Istanbul. Both chronologies put the next show the following night, November 22, in San Sebastian; it is told in Opening with Sometimes in San Sebastian.

What the Record Preserves

The chronology's entry ends with a remaster series line that names the band, the date, and Barcelona and carries the label info-file. Under the night's heading the chronology's page hangs thirteen objects: an image whose markup title reads Ticket, two whose markup titles read Eddie Vedder, one whose markup title reads Jeff Ament, one whose markup title reads Mike McCready, one whose markup title reads Pearl Jam, five more images, and two links into its remaster series, one to a zip file and one to a text file. The house holds four files for the night, in three folders: a text file in the show's folder, a text file in a folder for the soundcheck, and the remaster series' information file and its fingerprint list in the third. The show folder's text file repeats Five Horizons' heading and part of its note, from the note's second sentence, and then numbers twenty-six labels. The soundcheck folder's text file opens with Five Horizons' heading followed by the word SOUNDCHECK, numbers its labels from Unknown to "I'm Open," and calls its recording complete when set against the setlist, as that file's own statement. The information file opens with three lines naming the band, the date, and the venue and city as Five Horizons' heading gives them. Its sources entry prints two lettered lines; SHN is the last word of line a and CDR of line b. By the file's account the left channel of the mix is source a's left channel, and the right channel is source a's right channel together with source b's right channel, with the mark 50%/50%. Its lineage line starts with SHN/CDR, and FLAC is the last word of that line. Its notes, the file's own account of how the recording was handled, call one source excellent and free of crowd noise but without separation between the stereo channels, and say that the MS source, with more crowd noise, was mixed into the right channel of the first to widen the separation, except for the last 105 seconds of "Daughter" and the opening notes of "Sometimes," which the MS source does not carry. They also say that loud claps were removed and that the volume of the final mix was raised. Its twenty-nine numbered labels fall into three groups: Intro and nineteen labels from "Wash" to "Porch," then an Encore Break label and six from "Mankind" to "Blood," then a second Encore Break label and "Around the Bend." The fingerprint list gives each of twenty-nine FLAC file names a value, the names following the labels number by number, except that the fourth drops the comma from "Hail, Hail." Barcelona on November 21 comes down to one venue under two names, 125m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, an attendance of 8 000 in the chronology, marked sold out, and 8,000 in Five Horizons, one act on both bill lines, a soundcheck that both chronologies open with "Parting Ways," twenty-six entries for the show in one order in both, thirteen objects under the date, and four house files.
