A Chant Turned into a Jam in Cascais
The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's note says the crowd started a chant of the country's name, which the band took up and turned into a jam. Both notes say Eddie wore a mask for the songs before the set, which the chronology counts as four and Five Horizons as three.

On Sunday, November 24, 1996, Pearl Jam played in Portugal, at the venue that the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads as the Cascais Pavilion in Lisbon and Five Horizons as Dramatico in Cascais. The chronology's opening act line names Fastbacks, and Five Horizons' support act line names The Fastbacks. Both chronologies give four songs on a line they call pre-set, then twenty entries in the main set and four in the encore.
The show
Two Headings in Portugal
Both headings place the night in Portugal. Five Horizons brackets 120m after its heading without stating what it measures.
The Performance
The chronology's pre-set line names Eddie, Kurt Bloch, and Mike Musberger for "I Can't Explain," "The Kids Are Alright," and "My Generation," and Eddie, Jeff, Kurt Bloch, and Mike Musberger for "Young Man Blues." Five Horizons' pre-set lines give the same four songs in the same order. The chronology's note counts four songs, which it calls songs of The Who, with Jeff coming in for the last, "Young Man Blues"; Five Horizons' note counts three, which it calls Who songs, played with two of the Fastbacks; and both notes say Eddie wore a mask. The chronology's setlist runs "Release," "Last Exit," "Animal," "Hail Hail," "Once," "Dissident," "In My Tree," "Corduroy," "Elderly Woman," which it follows with three dots, "Whipping," "Habit," "Off He Goes," "Even Flow," "Daughter," "Jeremy," an entry it prints as Improv, "Present Tense," "Black Red Yellow," "Rearviewmirror," and "Alive." Its encore holds "Smile," "Black," "State Of Love And Trust," and "Porch." Five Horizons' set lines give twenty entries in the same order, naming in its own words the entry where the chronology prints Improv, and its enc line gives the same four. The chronology's note says the crowd started a chant of the country's name, which it calls very spirited, and that the band took it up and turned it into a jam. The chronology's note also says that Stone went on with the Fastbacks for "Mankind" during their set, and that in "Habit" the singer again did what it calls fast speaking or a nursery rhyme, as he had at the Berlin show. The chronology's note says that during "Porch" the singer went up the speakers and dived off, that the crowd, which it calls excellent, went wild, and that he came back with the back of his shirt torn, took it off, threw it out to the crowd, and wrapped a towel around himself.
The Next Step
San Sebastian, two days earlier, is told in Opening with Sometimes in San Sebastian. Both chronologies put the next show the following night, November 25, at the same venue; it is told in A Silver Suit with the Fastbacks in Cascais.
Recording & sound
What the Record Preserves
Under the night's heading the chronology's page hangs five objects: an image whose markup title reads Setlist and four more images. The house holds one text file for the night, which repeats Five Horizons' heading and support act line and then gives two lists: four names that match Five Horizons' pre-set lines in order, and twenty-four that match its set and enc lines in order and the chronology's setlist and encore at every place but the sixteenth. November 24 in Portugal comes down to a venue and a place that the two headings give differently, 120m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, one act on both bill lines, four songs before the set and twenty-four entries in each chronology, a chant that the chronology's note says the band turned into a jam, five objects under the date, and one house text file.
