Immortality at Oakland Stadium

· Alameda County Coliseum · Oakland

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's setlist for the November 18 show at Oakland Stadium carries "Immortality" just before "Do The Evolution." Among the objects under the night's heading on the chronology's page are images whose markup titles read Setlist and Ticket.

On Tuesday, November 18, 1997, Pearl Jam played Oakland Stadium in Oakland, a venue both chronologies name alike. Both chronologies print a supporting line that names The Rolling Stones. The chronology's setlist and Five Horizons' set line give the same entries in the same order.

The show

Oakland Stadium, Three Days On

Both headings give the place as Oakland, CA, and the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's heading adds USA to it. Five Horizons brackets 64m after its heading without stating what it measures. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology gives an attendance of 50 000+.

The Performance

The chronology's setlist runs "Hail Hail," "Animal," "Dissident," "Even Flow," "Jeremy," "Brain Of J.," "Daughter," "Better Man," "Corduroy," "Immortality," "Do The Evolution," "Alive," and "Black." Both notes say it was pouring, that shortly before Pearl Jam's set stage hands swept the water off the stage, and that Eddie turned out to be one of the sweepers, with the whole band in rainsuits of gray and blue. Both notes say that after "Dissident" Eddie took off his rainsuit, rolled it into a ball, and threw it to the crowd, and that during "Even Flow" he leaned back to catch raindrops in his mouth while Mike ran down the side ramp. Both notes call "Jeremy" a killer version and single out Stone's playing in "Brain Of J.," with Eddie doing the swim. Both notes say that during "Corduroy" Jeff took off his raincoat. Both notes say "Black" ended the show, with all the emotive phrases Eddie tossed in. Both notes say that, for all the downpour and the sound problems that the wind and the weather caused, the crowd was really into it and cheered.

The Next Step

Oakland, three days earlier, at the same stadium, is told in From Long Road to Yellow Ledbetter in Oakland. Both chronologies put the next show the following night, November 19, again at Oakland Stadium; it is told in Sometimes Opens the Set at Oakland Stadium.

What the Record Preserves

Five Horizons' entry closes with two short lines that read as link labels of its page: review and poster. The objects the chronology's page hangs under the night's heading include an image whose markup title reads Setlist, one whose markup title reads Ticket, and three more images. The house holds one text file for the night, which numbers fourteen labels, the last of them "Black," and after them calls the recording complete when set against the setlist, as its own statement about the recording. Oakland Stadium on November 18 comes down to one venue named alike, 64m that Five Horizons brackets without saying what it measures, The Rolling Stones on both supporting lines, the same entries in the same order in both chronologies' set fields, the objects under the date, and one house text file.
