A Night Full of Surprises in Sydney
The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology prints a soundcheck of seven songs, from "Who You Are" to "Dead Man," and both chronologies give the same five encore entries, from "Happy Birthday" to "Leaving Here." Both notes call it a show full of surprises and tell of a quiet passage in "Rearviewmirror" when the whole place was holding its breath, the singer standing motionless in a blue light.

On Monday, March 9, 1998, Pearl Jam played in Sydney, at a venue the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads as the Sydney Entertainment Centre and Five Horizons as the Entertainment Centre. The chronology prints an attendance of 12 000, marked sold out, and Five Horizons one of 12,000. Shudder to Think stands on the chronology's opening act line and on Five Horizons' support act line. Both chronologies print a soundcheck line, and their main lists both open with "Long Road" and close with "Rearviewmirror."
The show
The Heading in Sydney
Five Horizons brackets 90m after its heading without stating what it measures. Its heading gives the date as 03/09/98, and the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's gives March 9, 1998, each with Sydney, Australia, as the place.
The Performance
The chronology's soundcheck line gives seven entries in order: "Who You Are," "Pilate," "In Hiding," "Leaving Here," "Mankind," "Footsteps" and "Dead Man." Five Horizons' soundcheck line includes, in order, "Who You Are," "Pilate," "In Hiding," "Leaving Here," "Mankind," "Footsteps" and "Dead Man." The chronology's setlist runs from "Long Road" to "Rearviewmirror," and its entries include, in order, "Hail Hail," "Brain Of J.," "Do The Evolution," "Faithfull," "Corduroy," "Wishlist," "MFC," "Even Flow," "Animal," "Daughter," "Given To Fly," "Jeremy," "Dead Man" and "Better Man." Five Horizons' set line runs from "Long Road" to "Rearviewmirror," and its entries include, in order, "Hail Hail," "Brain of J," "Do the Evolution," "Faithfull," "Corduroy," "Wishlist," "MFC," "Even Flow," "Animal," "Daughter," "Given to Fly," "Jeremy," "Dead Man!" and "Better Man." Both chronologies give the same five encore entries in the same order: "Happy Birthday," "Who You Are," "Go," "Once" and "Leaving Here."
Both notes say that after "Jeremy" the singer sat on a chair, the whole stage dark but for a small light where he sat. In the quiet interlude of "Rearviewmirror," they say, the singer had the band go on playing, the whole audience breathless. The whole place, they say, stood holding its breath as long as it could, the singer motionless for a long while in a blue light. Both notes say a banner from the crowd for Jeff's birthday, which was the next day, was picked up by the singer, and that Jeff, sitting in the middle of the stage, wore it like a cape. A road crew member came out with a cake, they say, and the crowd, led by the singer, sang "Happy Birthday." Both notes say the singer threw the cake, a cream pie, straight into Jeff's face, that Jeff threw it back into the singer's, that the singer threw it on to Stone's and Mike's faces, and that Jack then stuffed the pie in his own face.

What the Record Preserves
Five Horizons' entry closes with two short lines that read as link labels of its page: review, then tour poster. The objects the chronology's page hangs under the night's heading include three images and an untitled link to a PDF. The house holds one text file for the night, a Twenty-Ten information file, which opens by repeating Five Horizons' heading and note. Its numbered labels run in one group from "Long Road" to "Leaving Here." After them the file calls its recording complete but for a bit of "Daughter," which it says is cut, measured against the setlist and the information it cites; that is a claim about the recording, not the concert. March 9 in Sydney comes down to one venue in two forms, a bracketed figure, the chronology's 12 000 marked sold out and Five Horizons' 12,000, one act on both bill lines, a soundcheck of seven songs in the chronology, main lists that open and close alike, the same five encore entries, notes that both call it a show full of surprises, three images among the objects, and one house file that repeats Five Horizons' heading and note.
