Jack's Drum Solo in Sydney

· Entertainment Centre · Sydney

Both chronologies' notes praise Jack's drum solo as "Immortality" closed, call the night's "Hail, Hail" incredibly fast and say Stone played some great guitar solos. Near the end of the show, both notes say, the singer said the band had to stop because he was due to surf early the next day.

On Wednesday, March 11, 1998, Pearl Jam played in Sydney, at a venue the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads as the Sydney Entertainment Centre and Five Horizons as the Entertainment Centre. The chronology prints an attendance of 12 000, marked sold out, and Five Horizons one of 12,000. Shudder to Think stands on the chronology's opening act line and on Five Horizons' support act line. Both chronologies' main lists open with "Oceans" and "Last Exit" and close with "Black" and "Porch," and both give the same five encore entries in one order, from "Given to Fly" to "Rockin' in the Free World."

The show

Date and Place

Five Horizons brackets 102m after its heading without stating what it measures. Its heading gives the date as 03/11/98, and the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's gives March 11, 1998, each with Sydney, Australia, as the place.

The Performance

The chronology's setlist runs from "Oceans" to "Porch," and its entries include, in order, "Last Exit," "Brain Of J.," "Hail Hail," "In Hiding," "Do The Evolution," "Corduroy," "Wishlist," "MFC," "Daughter," "Even Flow," "Mankind," "Elderly Woman...," "Lukin," "Not For You" and "Black." Five Horizons' set line gives, in order, "Oceans," "Last Exit," "Brain of J," "Hail Hail," "In Hiding," "Do the Evolution," "Corduroy," "Wishlist," "MFC," "Daughter," "Even Flow," "Mankind," "Elderly Woman," "Lukin," "Not for You," "Black" and "Porch." Both chronologies give the same five encore entries in the same order: "Given to Fly," "Better Man," "Immortality," "Smile" and "Rockin' in the Free World."

Both notes call the night's "Hail, Hail" incredibly fast, and both say "Mankind" finally surfaced. Both notes say Stone played some great guitar solos at this show. As "Porch" ended, both notes say, the singer reached out to the pit and pulled a man onto the stage; the man lifted the singer up onto his shoulders, spinning the singer around and around, and the singer then did the same to the man. At the end of "Immortality," they say, Jack shone during his great drum solo. When "Smile" ended, both notes say, the singer gave his harmonica to a former world champion surfer, a local of Sydney, who was watching from the side of the stage. Near the end of the show, they say, the singer said the band had to stop because he was due to surf early the next day.

The Next Step

The same venue two nights earlier, on March 9, is told in A Night Full of Surprises in Sydney.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

Five Horizons' entry closes with two short lines that read as link labels of its page: review, then tour poster. The objects the chronology's page hangs under the night's heading include an image whose markup title reads Setlist (signed) and another image. The house holds one text file for the night, a Twenty-Ten information file, whose first nine lines repeat Five Horizons' heading and note, though its heading line brackets 96m where Five Horizons brackets 102m, each without stating what it measures. Its twenty-two numbered labels run in one group from "Oceans" to "Rockin in the Free World." After them the file calls its recording complete, measured against the setlist and the information it cites, a claim about the recording, not the concert. March 11 in Sydney comes down to one venue in two forms, a bracketed figure, the chronology's 12 000 marked sold out and Five Horizons' 12,000, one act on both bill lines, main lists that open and close alike, the same five encore entries, notes that both call the night's "Hail, Hail" incredibly fast and praise Stone's solos and Jack's drum solo, an image titled Setlist (signed) and another image among the objects, and one house file that repeats Five Horizons' heading and note under a figure of its own.
