Breakdancing in Brisbane

· Entertainment Centre · Brisbane

The show

The Venue in Two Forms

Five Horizons brackets 120m after its heading without stating what it measures. Its heading gives the date as 03/14/98, and the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's gives March 14, 1998, each with Brisbane, Australia, as the place.

The Performance

The chronology's setlist runs from "Release" to "Porch," and its entries include, in order, "Hail Hail," "Animal," "Do The Evolution," "Faithfull," "Wishlist," "Corduroy," "In My Tree," "Alive," "Nothingman," "Brain Of J.," "Given To Fly," "Daughter," "MFC," "Immortality," "Black" and "Even Flow." Five Horizons gives its main set on a set line. Both chronologies give the same encore entries in the same order: "Footsteps," "Leaving Here," "Better Man," "Spin the Black Circle" and "Rockin' in the Free World."

Five Horizons' note speaks of the crowd being led in a chant, in answer-and-response style. It calls "Even Flow" a big highlight, praising an outstanding solo from Mike, though it adds that Mike was rather detached for the remainder of the night, and it says the singer started breakdancing at the rear of the stage. Five Horizons says the singer brought someone onto the stage, perhaps from the crowd, it wonders, to take Mike's part, as it puts it, on "Leaving Here," and that the singer ended the song with a jump and went quickly into "Better Man." It also says the singer drank and then tipped beer onto the crowd.

The Next Step

Sydney, two nights earlier, on March 12, is told in Throw Your Arms Around Me in Sydney. The following night, March 15, at the same venue, is told in A Partying Mood in Brisbane.

What the Record Preserves

Five Horizons' entry closes with two short lines that read as link labels of its page: review, then tour poster. The objects the chronology's page hangs under the night's heading include an image whose markup title reads Ticket and two other images. March 14 in Brisbane comes down to one venue in two forms, a bracketed figure, Five Horizons' attendance line of 15,000, one act on both bill lines, a setlist in the chronology from "Release" to "Porch," the same encore in both chronologies, a note in Five Horizons that praises "Even Flow" and Mike's solo, two closing link labels, and an image titled Ticket among the objects.
