The Singer in a Mask at Perth

· Entertainment Centre · Perth

Both chronologies' notes say that in Shudder to Think's set the singer took the stage in a mask and helped out with a little singing. They also say he congratulated Perth on its initiative in getting up a petition to have the band play there.

On Thursday, March 19, 1998, Pearl Jam played the Perth Entertainment Centre in Perth, which both chronologies head by that name. Five Horizons' attendance line reads 5,000, and Shudder to Think stands on the chronology's opening act line and on Five Horizons' support act line. Both chronologies print the same soundcheck of five songs, from "Animal" to "Yellow Ledbetter," and the same encore of six, from "Once" to "Baba O'Riley." The chronology's main list opens with "Sometimes" and "Do The Evolution" and closes with "Rearviewmirror" and "Wishlist."

The show

The Perth Heading

Five Horizons brackets 110m after its heading without stating what it measures. Its heading gives the date as 03/19/98, and the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's gives March 19, 1998, each with Perth, Australia, as the place.

The Performance

The chronology's soundcheck line gives five entries in order, "Animal," "Rearviewmirror," "Hail Hail," "Baba O'Riley" and "Yellow Ledbetter," and Five Horizons' soundcheck line gives the same five in the same order. The chronology's setlist runs from "Sometimes" to "Wishlist," and its entries include, in order, "Do The Evolution," "Animal," "Hail Hail," "Dissident," "Faithfull," "Even Flow," "Corduroy," "MFC," "Habit," "Daughter," "Nothingman," "Given To Fly," "Leatherman" and "Rearviewmirror." Five Horizons gives its main set on a set line. Both chronologies give the same six encore entries in the same order: "Once," "Alive," "Better Man," "Immortality," "Black" and "Baba O'Riley."

In Shudder to Think's set, both notes say, the singer came on in a mask and helped out with a little singing. After "Do The Evolution," both notes say, the singer congratulated Perth on its initiative in getting up a petition, and they add that signatures had been collected, 14 000 of them, to get the band to play Perth, a figure Five Horizons prints as 14,000. During "Alive," both notes say, the singer pulled out someone from the crowd, took him through a ballroom dance, then spun him around. Both notes say that for the first time "Leatherman" was played at a fan's request: the fan, who had talked to Stone ahead of the show, then brought a sign along, which the singer spotted.

The Next Step

Brisbane, four nights earlier, on March 15, is told in A Partying Mood in Brisbane. The following night, March 20, at the same venue, is told in A Last Show for Jack Irons in Perth.

Recording & sound

What the Record Preserves

The objects the chronology's page hangs under the night's heading include two images. The house holds one text file for the night, a Twenty-Ten information file, whose opening lines repeat Five Horizons' heading, with its bracketed figure, and Five Horizons' note. The file's numbered labels run in one group, and after them the file calls its recording complete but for a cut in "Immortality," when set against the setlist and the information it cites, which is a claim about the recording, not the concert. March 19 in Perth comes down to a venue both chronologies head alike, a bracketed figure, Five Horizons' attendance line of 5,000, one act on both bill lines, the same soundcheck and the same encore in both chronologies, notes that tell of the singer helping out in a mask in Shudder to Think's set and of a petition, two images among the objects, and one house file that repeats Five Horizons' heading and note.
