Mike's Bluesy Solos in Sacramento

· Arco Arena · Sacramento

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's note says Mike played really well that night, his solos more bluesy than wailing, and that he played "Corduroy" with a slide. The chronology prints an attendance of 17 000 and marks the show sold out, and Five Horizons prints 17,000.

On Thursday, July 16, 1998, Pearl Jam played in Sacramento, at the ARCO Arena as the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads it, which Five Horizons heads as the Arco Arena. Both chronologies name X, the chronology on its opening act line and Five Horizons on its support act line. Both chronologies print the same two soundcheck entries, "Porch" and "Alone," and the same five entries in the first encore, ending with "Porch," which Five Horizons prints as "Porch!" Their second encores both hold "Yellow Ledbetter."

The show

ARCO or Arco

The two headings give the night as July 16, 1998, the ARCO Arena and Sacramento, CA, USA, in the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology, and as 07/16/98, the Arco Arena and Sacramento, CA, in Five Horizons. Five Horizons brackets 105m after its heading without stating what it measures. The chronology's attendance line prints 17 000 and marks the show sold out, and Five Horizons' prints 17,000. Both notes say Eddie stood at the stage's side, where nearly fifteen minutes passed before the crowd noticed him, then came out and introduced X.

The Performance

The chronology's setlist opens with "Spin The Black Circle" and "Hail Hail" and closes with "Wishlist," "Alive" and "Go," and between them it includes "Corduroy," "MFC," "Habit," "Even Flow," "Jeremy" and "Immortality," in that order; Five Horizons' set line opens, closes and runs between the same way. The chronology's first encore gives "Do The Evolution," "Better Man," "In My Tree," "Black" and "Porch," and Five Horizons' gives the same five in the same order.

During "Brain Of J.," the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology's note says, there were different lighting effects that night, among them lights in red, white and blue on the backdrop. The note says Mike played really well, his solos totally different that night and more bluesy than wailing, and that he played "Corduroy" with a slide. It says this seemed to be a night on which Eddie botched lyrics, in four songs: "Better Man" and "Even Flow," then "Wishlist" and "Rearviewmirror." It sees a hint of Eddie's annoyance at the crowd's poor reception of X, when he altered the lyrics during a part of "MFC." It says the energy, really strong as the show started, dissipated, almost as if Pearl Jam were afraid of playing too hard. It also says something seemed to be bothering Eddie; what he said during "Porch," it says, may have referred to the crowd, which it calls very rough.

The Next Step

Inglewood, two days earlier, on July 14, is told in A Dramatic Pause at the Forum. Portland, two days later, on July 18, is told in Matching Jumps at the Rose Garden Arena.

What the Record Preserves

Five objects hang under the night's heading on the chronology's page: four images and an untitled link to a PDF file. July 16 in Sacramento comes down to one venue in two forms, attendance lines that agree, one act on both bills, the same soundcheck and encores in both chronologies, a note on the lights, the solos and the lyrics, and five objects.
