Matching Jumps at the Rose Garden Arena

· Rose Garden · Portland

Five Horizons' note says Mike and Stone, across the stage from each other, did matching jumps during "Alive." Both chronologies name Frank Black on the bill.

On Saturday, July 18, 1998, Pearl Jam played the Rose Garden Arena in Portland, as both chronologies head the night. Five Horizons gives an attendance of 18,000, and the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology names Frank Black as the opening act where Five Horizons names him the support act. Both set lines open with "Corduroy" and "Hail Hail" and close with "Present Tense," "Rearviewmirror" and "Alive," and the two chronologies print an encore of the same six entries in the same order, ending with "Leaving Here" and "Go."

The show

Rose Garden Arena

The two headings give the night as July 18, 1998, the Rose Garden Arena and Portland, OR, USA, in the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology, and as 07/18/98, the Rose Garden Arena and Portland, OR, in Five Horizons. Five Horizons brackets 110m after its heading without stating what it measures. Five Horizons' attendance line prints 18,000.

The Performance

The chronology's soundcheck line gives four entries: "I Got You," "Not For You," "Hail Hail" and "Sonic Reducer." Between their opening and closing songs, both set lines include "In Hiding," "Jeremy," "In My Tree" and "Wishlist," in that order. The chronology gives an encore of "Do The Evolution," "Black," "Leatherman," "Better Man," "Leaving Here" and "Go," and Five Horizons gives the same six in the same order.

Five Horizons' note says Stone bounced up and down at the stage's side from the first song, and that he and Mike, across the stage from each other, did matching jumps during "Alive." The note calls "In My Tree" and "Jeremy" perfect. It says the beginning of "Elderly Woman" was humorous, Stone and Ed taking turns for roughly three minutes. Toward the close of one song, the note says, Ed used an ebow, and during a song, with the lights brought down, the backdrop showed a cartoon. During the solo in "Black," it says, Ed sat beside Mike's amp, an ear to it. Matt, it says, sang backup on "Better Man" and "Leatherman." It also says Mike paraded a dog around the stage. The note lists many setlist changes, three songs dropped among them: "Faithfull" and "All Those Yesterdays," with "Nothingman" as the third.

The Next Step

Sacramento, two days earlier, on July 16, is told in Mike's Bluesy Solos in Sacramento. Both chronologies put the next show the following night, July 19, in Vancouver; it is told in Baba O'Riley Brings the House Down in Vancouver.

What the Record Preserves

One object hangs under the night's heading on the chronology's page, an image. July 18 in Portland comes down to one venue named alike in both chronologies, Five Horizons' attendance of 18,000, Frank Black on both bills, set lines that open and close alike, the same encore entries in both chronologies, a Five Horizons note on jumps, an ebow, a cartoon and a dog, and one image.
