Free Popsicles at Memorial Stadium

· Memorial Stadium · Seattle

Both chronologies' notes say that at the first of the band's hometown gigs the band provided an atmosphere they call excellently organized and festive, people walking the crowd and handing out free popsicles. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology prints an attendance of 25 000 and marks the show sold out, and Five Horizons prints 25,000.

On Tuesday, July 21, 1998, Pearl Jam played Memorial Stadium in Seattle, as the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology and Five Horizons head the night. Both chronologies name The Wallflowers and Zeke, the chronology on its opening acts line and Five Horizons on its support act line. Both set lines open with "Corduroy" and "Whipping" and close with "Rearviewmirror," "Black" and "Alive," and both second encores hold "Baba O'Riley" and "Yellow Ledbetter."

The show

Memorial Stadium

The two headings give the night as July 21, 1998, Memorial Stadium and Seattle, WA, USA, in the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology, and as 07/21/98, Memorial Stadium and Seattle, WA, in Five Horizons. Five Horizons brackets 111m after its heading without stating what it measures. The chronology's attendance line prints 25 000 and marks the show sold out, and Five Horizons' prints 25,000. Both notes call this the first of the band's hometown gigs and say the band provided an atmosphere that was excellently organized and festive, people walking the crowd and handing out free popsicles.

The Performance

Each chronology's soundcheck line gives, in order, "Leatherman," "Mankind," "Immortality," "Footsteps," "MFC," "Animal" and "I Can't Explain." The chronology's setlist gives, in order, "Corduroy," "Whipping," "Hail Hail," "Brain Of J.," "Dissident," "Even Flow," "Jeremy," "Given To Fly," "Leatherman," "In Hiding," "State Of Love And Trust," "Daughter," "MFC," "Better Man," "Rearviewmirror," "Black" and "Alive," and Five Horizons' set line gives the same entries in the same order. Both first encores include, in order, "Do The Evolution," "Wishlist," "Footsteps," "Spin The Black Circle" and "Go."

Both notes find the crowd extremely sedate and say this went on frustrating Eddie until he snapped. Prompted by this, they say, Eddie told a story they call funny, about the whole band living in one house. Both notes call Mike's solos excellent and say Matt once again excelled. Eddie also mentioned, they say, that these shows were benefits. The chronology's note says a sarcastic story introduced "Do The Evolution."

The Next Step

July 19, two days earlier, is told in Baba O'Riley Brings the House Down in Vancouver. Both chronologies put the next show the following night, July 22, in Seattle; it is told in Bopping Onstage to Introduce the Wallflowers.

What the Record Preserves

Five Horizons' entry closes with four short lines that read as link labels of its page: poster, other poster, t-shirt, then review and photos. Five objects hang under the night's heading on the chronology's page: four images, among them one whose markup title reads Ticket, and an untitled link to a PDF file. July 21 in Seattle comes down to one stadium named alike in both chronologies, attendance lines that agree, The Wallflowers and Zeke on both bills, the same set entries in one order in both chronologies, notes on free popsicles, a funny story and a benefit, and five objects.
