Mike Jams with Stone in East Lansing
Both chronologies' notes say that in "Brain Of J.," while Stone soloed, Mike jammed with him. The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology prints an attendance of 13 000 and marks the show sold out, and Five Horizons prints 15,300.

On Tuesday, August 18, 1998, Pearl Jam played in East Lansing, at a venue the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads as the Jack Breslin Student Events Center and Five Horizons as the Breslin Student Events Center. Both chronologies name Iggy Pop, the chronology on its opening act line and Five Horizons on its support act line. Both chronologies print the same fifteen set entries in one order, from "Release" to "Rearviewmirror."
The show
Jack Breslin or Breslin
The two headings give the night as August 18, 1998, the Jack Breslin Student Events Center and East Lansing, MI, USA, in the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology, and as 08/18/98, the Breslin Student Events Center and East Lansing, MI, in Five Horizons. Five Horizons brackets 95m after its heading without stating what it measures. The chronology's attendance line prints 13 000 and marks the show sold out, and Five Horizons' prints 15,300.
The Performance
Each chronology's soundcheck line gives, in order, "Soldier Of Love," "Footsteps," "Hard To Imagine," "Dissident," "All Those Yesterdays" and "No Way," then Improv, then "Indifference" and "Satan's Bed." The chronology's setlist gives, in order, "Release," "Do The Evolution," "Spin The Black Circle," "Brain Of J.," "Dissident," "Given To Fly," "Corduroy," "MFC," "Wishlist," "Jeremy," "Even Flow," "Faithfull," "Elderly Woman," "Off He Goes" and "Rearviewmirror," and Five Horizons' set line gives the same fifteen in the same order. The chronology follows "Elderly Woman" with three dots, where Five Horizons prints the plain title. Both encore lines include, in order, "Hail Hail," "Alive," "Black" and "Soldier Of Love."
In "Brain Of J.," both notes say, Mike and Stone jammed together while Stone soloed. On "Wishlist," they say, the e-bow gave Eddie trouble, he flubbed the lyrics, and he played just a couple of notes. In "Even Flow," they say, Matt played a fill that they call really cool, and Mike went over and jammed on it. The chronology's note says "Elderly Woman" was directed toward the crowd. It calls "Rearviewmirror" excellent, with a really trancey jam. Midway through that song, the note says, Eddie took out a towel and put it over the monitors, then set a soccer ball upon the towel and kicked the ball out into the arena's middle. During "Alive," it says, the stage was brightly lit, and Eddie, checking out the crowd, saw a sign that set him laughing and shaking his finger with a big smile. In "Black," it says, Mike played a solo, after which the crowd gave a big round of applause. Eddie, the note says, introduced "Soldier Of Love," which it calls a 1962 song, as one the band had learned just that day, brought a girl out to hold, for him, his journal with the written lyrics, and spoke into her recorder; near the song's end they began dancing. In his last comments of the night, it says, Eddie thanked the crowd for picking Pearl Jam rather than something else that was also playing nearby that night, and he commented on a Michigan bill to censor live music.

What the Record Preserves
Seven objects hang under the night's heading on the chronology's page: six images, among them one whose markup title reads Ticket, and an untitled link to a PDF file. August 18 in East Lansing comes down to one venue named two ways, two attendance figures, Iggy Pop on both bills, fifteen set entries in one order in both chronologies, notes on a jam in "Brain Of J.," a cool fill in "Even Flow" and a trancey "Rearviewmirror," and seven objects.
