A Silver Mask and a Turkey Hat

· Shoreline · Mountain View

Both chronologies' notes say Mike wore a silver mask for Halloween, and Stone a turkey hat, the only two of the band to dress for it. The notes find the band much more comfortable this night, and more confident, making much eye contact with its audience.

On Sunday, October 31, 1999, Pearl Jam played the Shoreline Amphitheatre, as the Pearl Jam Concert Chronology names the venue. The two headings set the words Bridge School Benefit and acoustic in parentheses after the place, the chronology capitalizing the second. The chronology's setlist gives seven songs, from "Nothing As It Seems" to "Last Kiss," and Five Horizons' set field gives them in the same order. Both notes close on Eddie dedicating "Last Kiss" to one student in particular.

The show

Halloween at the Benefit

The Pearl Jam Concert Chronology heads the night October 31, 1999, and Five Horizons 10/31/99. Mountain View, CA, USA, is the place in the chronology's heading, and Mountain View, CA, in Five Horizons'. Five Horizons brackets 38m after its heading without stating what it measures. Both notes say that when the band took the stage, Mike and Stone were its only members in Halloween costume, Mike wearing a silver mask and Stone a turkey hat.

The Performance

The chronology's setlist runs seven songs: "Nothing As It Seems," "Daughter," "Wishlist," "Better Man," "Off He Goes," "Black," and "Last Kiss." Five Horizons' set field includes them in the same order.

Both notes say Eddie asked everyone to sit down and then started "Nothing As It Seems," a song the notes call incredible and bluesy. Both notes call the "Daughter" that followed slightly different and very boppy, and say that at its end Eddie used his fist to make a megaphone effect but never got to a tag. Both notes find the band much more comfortable this night, and more confident, making much eye contact with its audience, while Eddie smiled and Jeff even looked up, in the notes' words, from the floor. During "Wishlist," both notes say, Eddie sang other words in place of one line and turned toward the Bridge students, who were at the back. Mike took all the solos in "Wishlist," both notes say, and they call Eddie's voice just great. After "Better Man," both notes say, Eddie told a story and dedicated "Off He Goes," and the notes call the song incredibly beautiful. Eddie fumbled the lyrics of "Black," both notes say, laughed it off, and turned it into a joke in song. At one line, both notes say, he turned once more to the Bridge students. Finally, both notes say, Eddie talked about how some of the students had become friends after four Bridge performances. He dedicated "Last Kiss," the notes go on, to one student in particular, by special request, singing the whole of it to her, his face streaming with tears.
